Driving style has a big role to play in reducing fuel consumption and
therefore emissions. Factors discussed in this section include:
Smooth driving
Big savings (up to 30%) can be made by driving smoothly. Driving smoothly is about driving with the flow of the traffic, but avoiding unnecessary acceleration and therefore unnecessary use of fuel. Rapid acceleration, and constant acceleration and braking uses much more fuel than gently accelerating to cruising speed and then maintaining a steady speed.
To be able to flow smoothly in traffic you have to look beyond the car ahead and anticipate traffic conditions: what is happening at the next intersection, is that bus going to pull out, are cars likely to turn right in front of me? Keep a buffer zone between you and the car ahead to avoid the “accelerate / brake” mode of driving.
When slowing down, lift off the accelerator early and take advantage of the car's momentum, getting back to cruising speed from rolling uses far less petrol than stopping and then starting again.
The most efficient speed for driving will vary from car to car, however at speeds over 90 km/h, fuel consumption dramatically increases with increases in speed.
Choice of gear
For manual cars, driving in a gear lower than you need wastes fuel. Letting the engine labour in top gear on hills and corners is also wasteful. Change up through the gears and into top gear as soon as possible but without accelerating harder than necessary. In automatic cars, the automatic transmission will shift up gears more quickly and smoothly if you ease back slightly on the accelerator once the car gets moving. In both cases, when going up hills, let the car slow slightly rather than dropping down gears to keep up a constant speed.
Idling
Restarting the engine uses less fuel than idling. So if you are parked and waiting, switch off the engine.
Load and resistance
Reducing the load and wind resistance of a car will reduce its fuel use. Remove unnecessary weight from the boot and roof racks and other attachments if not in use. Driving with windows down at speeds over 50 km/h increases the drag on the car.
Air conditioner
The air conditioner can increase fuel consumption by between five and ten per cent, so use it sparingly. If it is hotter inside your car than outside, drive with the windows down for a few minutes to help cool the car before starting the air conditioning.
Filling up
Don't overfill your car with petrol - fill to the first click. Beyond that point, fuel can be wasted through spillage and evaporation. Make sure your fuel cap is properly fitted and in good condition.
